Fr Sebastian Thuruthel, a missionary priest belonging to the Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle is honored VAIDIKA RATNAM of year 2015.
The matter was announced in a personal letter handed to Fr Thuruthel by the Supreme head of the Syro Malabar Church, Major Archbishop Mar George Alenchery with the approval of the Synod on 20th of August.
Fr Thuruthel a terrific teacher, had played a great role in the formation of hundreds of priests, bishops, archbishops including the present head of the Syro Malabar Church Cardinal George Alancherry.MST is proud to have one priest like him.
While being a missionary priest with erudition and enthusiasm, Fr Thuruthel took venturesome initiative to gain MST’s third missionary region Sangli during his tenure as MST’s Director General. In that possition Fr Thuruthel had oriented the MST to make significant policy shifts helping the Society to reach its present heights.
Mar Paul Chittilappilly (Bishop of Kalyan) entrusted four districts of Maharashtra as Sangli Region to the Missionary Society through a mutual agreement signed by the Bishop of Kalyan and the Director General of MST Very Rev. Fr. Sebastian Thuruthel on 1st May 1990.
MST is not a religious congregation in the strict sense since its members take only the vows of chastity and obedience. It is a Society of Apostolic life the only one of its kind in India. Wherever the MSTs go they retain their apostolic tradition, identity and patrimony.
Their mission being evangelization, MSTs work in less Christian areas and establish the Church.
